FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport builds on a solid and proven foundation for 2021, with new standard and advanced safety features, a new stylish Limited Edition (LE) and a revised Black Edition (BE) trim. Making its debut on showroom floors in December 2020, the vehicle is Mitsubishi Motors’ best-selling model, and was ranked in the top three in the 2020 JD Power IQS study in the small SUV class, reinforcing the vehicle’s quality and value.

Advanced Safety Features
All 2021 Outlander Sport models feature the following standard safety equipment across all trim levels: Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and Automatic High Beam. Additionally, buyers will appreciate standard rain sensing windshield wipers, auto dimming mirror, and automatic headlights as standard equipment on the ES trim and above.

• Forward Collision Mitigation – helps prevent a frontal collision or reduces the severity of that collision if it becomes unavoidable, detecting both vehicles and pedestrians via camera and laser radar.
• Lane Departure Warning – uses an onboard camera to monitor lane position in front of the vehicle, audibly and visually alerting the driver if it detects the vehicle unintentionally leaving its lane.
• Automatic High Beam – headlights automatically adjust between brightness levels depending on the surrounding lights.

From the chassis on up, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was designed with safety in mind. Based on the body structure it shares with its larger brother, the Outlander, Outlander Sport uses the same Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body design. RISE is designed to improve impact safety from all directions by utilizing a high-rigidity body and crush zones which progressively crumble to help absorb collision energy.

Working to keep occupants safer during collisions is a comprehensive seven-airbag supplementary restraint system, which includes side, curtain, and a driver's knee airbag. The driver's knee airbag helps to control the driver’s posture in a frontal impact, reducing the risk of greater injury to the legs during a frontal collision. Front seats feature seatbelt pretensioners that secure occupants during collisions, and force-limiters that gently release the belt an instant after an impact to minimize the risk of belt-related injury.

Signature Dynamic Design
This dynamic Mitsubishi CUV is distinguished by its wedge profile with strong character and beltline, a forward-raked rear window, a sharply cut rear gate and short overhang, and broad fenders, projecting the image of a powerful athlete.

In the front, the authoritative black radiator grille projects strength and solidity and embodies Mitsubishi’s signature Dynamic Shield design. SE and GT models are equipped with heated side mirrors, in-mirror turn-signal repeaters and an automatic power-folding side mirrors.

The rear design is distinguished by the upright styling, centered around the high-mounted, T-shaped rear lamps, and giving a sense of strength and ruggedness. When illuminated, the tubular LED brake lights and the central LED hi-mount stop light form a single bar of light running across the tail, giving the vehicle a broad, balanced appearance.

Sleek, Sporty Interior
On the inside, the 2021 Outlander Sport boasts high-quality fabrics, along with and gloss black and silver-painted HVAC controls. The horizontal dashboard, silver metal frames and black/silver monotone color scheme create a refined interior that is both sleek and sporty. Covering the dashboard surfaces and extending to the door trim is a stylish, grained soft padding that gives a premium look and feel.

From the One-touch Start System, to the leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift, the Outlander Sport gives the driver a sense that adventure is within reach. Adventure, but with efficiency in mind– the instrument display features an ECO driver indicator light, signaling that the vehicle is maximizing fuel efficiency.

Maximizing luggage space utility, without compromising exterior style, the rear seat uses a 60:40 split with long slide-and-recline adjustment. In addition to providing rear occupants with plenty of legroom, allowing them to settle on a comfortable seating position and enjoy long trips with ample headroom.

Increased Connectivity
For the 2021 Outlander Sport, a second generation 8.0-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio (SDA) unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is standard on the LE, SE, and GT trims, while lower trims feature a 7-inch Display Audio System.

All Outlander Sport models are well-equipped, including standard automatic climate control and rain-sensing windshield wipers. SE and above trims also receive the keyless FAST-Key Passive-entry system. It's as simple as one push to unlock the driver door handle and two pushes on the handle for the others.

New for 2021: Limited Edition and Revised Black Edition Trims
The new LE trim sports black outside mirrors, a black grille and black 18-inch alloy wheels. On the inside, red interior accent stitching adorns the vehicle’s seats, shifter, steering wheel and parking brake lever, adding a sense of sportiness and character to Outlander Sport.

The revised BE trim offers increased standard safety and convenience features compared to 2020 while also dialing up Outlander Sport’s visual flair. The BE trim, available in 2WD and All-Wheel Control (AWC) configurations, also boasts the following design enhancements for a striking and sporty appearance:

• Revised front and rear air dams in gloss black with red accents
• Alloy fuel filler door
• Side body graphics
• Black outside mirrors
• Black door handles
• Black 18-inch wheels with red accent
• Large rear body spoiler
• Black Edition exterior badging
• Tailgate protector trim in gloss black

The Black Edition is available in four eye-catching colors: Red Diamond, Pearl White, Black Labrador and Sunshine Orange.

Powertrain, Performance and Fuel Economy
Under the hood, Outlander Sport comes standard with a MIVEC-equipped 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 148hp at 6,000rpm and 145lb-ft of torque at 4,200rpm.

To reduce weight, the engine block is cast out of lightweight aluminum, and MIVEC variable valve timing technology is used to improve both engine output and efficiency.

Top-trim GT models are powered by a larger displacement 2.4-liter MIVEC 4-cylinder engine that produces 20 more horsepower (168 bhp) over the standard 2.0-liter engine's output, as well as 167 lb.-ft. of torque.

The seven-step Sportronic™ CVT continuously variable transmission is fitted as standard equipment. Mitsubishi engineers have spent countless development hours optimizing the CVT transmission's shift patterns and gear ratios, as well as reducing friction within its hydraulic oil control for greater fuel economy.

To enhance the driving experience, paddle shifters are mounted just behind the steering wheel, allowing the driver to switch between automatic and manual shifting modes without moving their hands.

The CVT's manual gear shifting Sport mode can be selected by either pulling the paddle shifter while the lever is in "D" or by selecting Sport mode with the shift lever. After Sport mode is activated, the driver can shift up or down using the paddle shifters. Pulling the right paddle shifter for at least two seconds will deactivate Sport mode.

Super All-Wheel Control (AWC)
Building upon Mitsubishi's long and successful history of off-road performance, the electronically controlled All-Wheel Control (AWC) 4WD system is available, starting with the ES trim. AWC provides increased handling, traction, and stability during varied driving or weather situations. The compact design of the AWC system also calls for low viscosity transfer case oil for reduced friction and is automatically switches between 2WD and 4WD modes, improving fuel efficiency.

The Outlander Sport AWC system also features a driver control knob, conveniently located in the center console, to adjust the electronically controlled coupling. With selectable more fuel-efficient 2WD, capable 4WD Auto and rough surface 4WD Lock modes, AWC allows the driver to help maximize fuel economy and traction as may be needed and over various surfaces.

Fun to Drive
With its low curb weight, compact mobility, and available electronically controlled AWC, the compact crossover also features a fun-to-drive handling balance that resonates with active CUV buyers. Designed to be nimble and swift both on-road and off-road, the vehicle combines outstanding ground clearance with a tuned MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension design. Lightweight suspension pieces and front and rear sway bars are just a few elements of a suspension that has been tuned for better agility, body roll and ride comfort. Four-wheel independent gas-charged shock absorbers and coil springs are used at all four corners.

Standard on all models are the driver assist aids Active Stability Control (ASC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). Making for a more controlled and pleasant driving experience through many situations, ASC helps ensure stability during slippery driving conditions and helps maintain control after sudden driving inputs. ASC also features traction control to minimize wheel spin, allowing for worry-free take-offs and increased grip on slippery roads. Hill Start Assist uses front and rear gravity sensors to detect steep hills or gradients and applies brake pressure to deter the vehicle from rolling backwards, making for easier starts.

Innovative Fuel Economy
Outlander Sport is designed from the outset to improve its efficiency, from the consideration of material to the reduction of friction and drag with the road surface. It’s done to help improve efficiency and to reduce fuel usage. The choice of Electric Power Steering (EPS) eliminates the parasitic engine drag found in conventional hydraulic power steering systems, freeing up engine efficiency, providing improved response and driver feedback, and increasing fuel economy.

Aerodynamics, EPS, low curb weight, and efficient engine and transmission technology all work together to achieve 23 MPG (city) and 29 MPG (highway) for a combined rating of 26 MPG in both 2WD and AWC configurations. The 2.4L engine returns 23 MPG (city) and 25 MPG (highway) in its standard AWC configuration.

This impressive crossover merges the Outlander family's impressive real-world capability with a smaller, more maneuverable urban package. Designed to fit with a wide range of active lifestyles, the vehicle features the easy entry, exit, and turning radius of a smaller vehicle, yet also the higher sightline and interior volume of a CUV.
